SREE MARIYAMMAN TEMPLE (KERALA, INDIA) achieved the title of ‘MOST WOMEN PARTICIPANTS IN A SINGLE FESTIVAL RITUAL’ by involving 4,115 women with thalam (offering plates) filled with traditional crops and lit lamps as a devotion to Goddess Mariyamma Devi on 05 March 2024, under the leadership of the Batheri Mahaganapati Kshethra Samithi.
The achievement was officially certified on 09 May 2025.

On March 5, 2024, the Sree Mariyamman Temple in Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad, made history by holding one of the largest Thalapoli processions ever. The procession was part of the Batheri Mariyamman Kshethra Mahotsava (Temple Festival) and is being considered for a place in the Limca Book of Records 2025.
A Special Tradition
The Thalapoli procession is a very important religious event in the area. The procession started at the Mahaganapathy Temple and took about 5 hours to go around the city, finally ending at the Sree Mariyamman Temple.
A Display of Faith
A total of 4115 women took part in the procession. Each woman carried a ‘Thalam’ (offering plate) filled with agricultural crops like pepper and turmeric and lit lamps to honor Mariyamma Devi. This is a symbol of prayer and respect to the goddess.
The procession was decorated with 5 Gajaveeras (decorated elephants), Kavadi, Tablo, and many other traditional decorations. It also featured Panchavadyam, Pandi Melam, and Nadaswaram performances, which added to the festive and spiritual atmosphere.
A Huge Crowd
Around one lakh people came to watch the event, making it a massive gathering in Sulthan Bathery. It was not just a religious event but also a celebration of local culture and tradition.
Record Attempt
With 4115 women participating, this event has set a record for the largest Thalapoli procession. Every woman who took part was registered, and independent witnesses confirmed the numbers to ensure accuracy.
